What is a Lithophane?
It is a unique art form that is making a comeback from the past. When people encounter one for the first time, they are often a little confused becuase it doesn’t look like much until they hold it up to the light and the secret image is revealed.
A lithophane must be made from a translucent material so the varying thicknesses allow less or more light through to form an image. Thicker areas create darker regions while thinner areas transmit more light to form lighter places.
Origionally these were made from porcelain and it took a truly skilled artist many hours to create. With modern 3d printers and specialized software it is now possible take a photo and create a lithophane from plastic.

How it’s made.
Completely locally here in Northern Alberta
After you upload your photo it is processed with specialized 3d modeling software and then sent to a 3D printer. Also known as additive manufacturing, technology is especially well suited for one-off custom products.
While the plastic these are printed from is very durable and will last for many years, though watch out for high temperatures it will deform above 60°C so avoid keeping it in a hot car. This plastic is also plant based and biodegradable, however it is not certified for food use.
